Smart-POD - The Vision

The long term vision for Smart-Pod is to produce a fully tested sustainable autonomous building modular building solution. To achieve this Smart-Pod will need the following attributes:

  • Transitory modular educational accommodation

It is the intention that the same POD design will be used by different establishments, where transitional accommodation is required or as more permanent sustainable solution to school building programmes.

  • Sustainable Design

The energy for the pod will be provided by renewable energy technology. When the pod is not in use it will store the energy for later re-use for when the POD is re-occupied. The energy performance of the POD will be optimised via heat recovery, low energy technologies and an extremely high level of insulation.

The PODS will also be future proofed with common internal service cores where either damaged or outdated elements will be demountable using plug and play connections. The POD will also make the most of any passive gains from its surrounding environment to maximise its sustainability. The POD will be designed to be adaptable to environment conditions in which it will be used.

  • Autonomy from services

The aim for the POD is to ensure it has no physical link with the existing services/utilities. The POD is to be designed to use wireless communication to connect with the internet and voice calls (if required). Services for water are intended to be gained via rain water harvesting methods and waste will be removed via a septic vacuum activated tank (similar to toilet facilities on trains).

  • Rapid on-site construction / cost effective off site construction

The Construction method on site will allow the pod to be installed in 24hrs. The off site construction method will be optimised to suit the on site construction and minimisation of costs. It is envisaged that the foundations for the pod will built upon adjustable legs to suit a variety of terrains.

  • High Degree of Architectural Merit

We envisaged the POD to be of high architectural merit both in terms of its form, internal circulation and sustainability.
